Against interpretation
A poem on perception and meaning.
I ask, swirls of Martian fire Starlight melted in the sea Grant me virgin eyes to see Beauty as is, beauty born radiant Against interpretation, beauty born free
What beauty is more sparkling, what more fragrant Than joy unbridled, burning spear of light vagrant I beseech you, with heart, mind, and sinew Rain beauty upon me Fall from heaven the choir of Galilee Open the gates of Babylon Part the sea of the Romans Lower the ramparts oh Agamemnon Climb the mountains of Illyria Wreck the forts of Niani And fall from heaven the reign of Apollo
I stand in the winter sunlight Of a day baptised in frost Writing a poem forthright Adam draws before me Using the colours of twilight
